Biology
A-Level
Exam Board: Edexcel | Syllabus Code: WBI1
Overview
This course is ideal for students who are fascinated by living organisms, the human body, genetics, the environment, and the science of life. If you enjoy practical work, critical thinking, and understanding how living systems work, Biology could be a great choice.
What will you study?
A-Level Biology explores the structure, function, and interactions of living organisms— from molecules to ecosystems.
Topics include:
Cell biology – cell structure, membranes, and division
Biological molecules – proteins, enzymes, DNA, and carbohydrates
Genetics and inheritance – including gene expression and mutations
Human physiology – respiration, circulation, nervous and immune systems
Plant biology – transport, photosynthesis, and adaptation
Ecology and the environment – biodiversity, sustainability, and ecosystems
Evolution and classification
Biotechnology and genetic engineering (in the A2 course)
Biology involves a lot of content—you’ll need strong memory and essay-writing skills. A solid foundation in chemistry and maths is helpful for success.
Assessment
A-level Biology is assessed across 6 external examinations. Three of these happen at the end of the first year of teaching, and three after the two full years of the A-level.
Future Pathways
Biology develops your scientific thinking, analytical skills, and ability to interpret data and experimental results. It’s excellent preparation for degrees in medicine, veterinary science, environmental science, biochemistry, and related fields.
