Chemistry

A-Level

Exam Board: Edexcel | Syllabus Code: WCH1

Overview

This course is ideal for students who are interested in understanding what substances are made of, how they interact, and why chemical reactions happen. If you enjoy problem- solving, experiments, and applying logical thinking to real-world problems, Chemistry is a strong choice.

What will you study?

Chemistry bridges the gap between physics and biology and is often called the "central science."

You’ll study three key areas:

  • Physical Chemistry – atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, and equilibria

  • Inorganic Chemistry – elements of the periodic table, group trends, transition metals, and redox reactions

  • Organic Chemistry – carbon-based molecules, including hydrocarbons, alcohols, acids, polymers, and reaction mechanisms

Chemistry is mathematically demanding—you’ll need confidence with algebra, ratios, and scientific notation.

Assessment

A-level Chemistry is assessed across 6 external examinations. Three of these happen at the end of the first year of teaching, and three after the two full years of the A-level.

Future Pathways

Chemistry helps develop precision, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. It’s essential for careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacology, chemical engineering, environmental science, and more.
