Overview
Cambridge International AS and A Level English Language provides learners with the opportunity to study English language and its use in communication. Learners will be encouraged to respond critically to a wide variety of texts in a range of forms, styles and contexts, and to promote skills of communication, reading, research and analysis.
Through their study, learners will develop an ability to read and analyse material, gaining further knowledge and understanding of English language features and issues. Learners will also develop the skills of writing clearly, accurately, creatively and effectively for different purposes and audiences.
Assessment
AS Level (Papers 1 & 2 - 50% each of AS)
Paper 1: Reading: Candidates answer Q1 (compulsory directed response + commentary) and one of two optional questions (text analysis).
Paper 2: Writing: Two sections: Section A (shorter writing + reflective commentary) and Section B (extended writing). Requires strong time management, with ~1 hour per section.
A Level (Papers 3 & 4 - 50% each of A Level)
Paper 3: Language Analysis: Section A (language change) and Section B (child language acquisition).
Paper 4: Language Topics: Section A (English in the World) and Section B (Language and the Self)
Future Pathways
The Cambridge International A Level English Language syllabus equips students with analytical, communicative, and critical thinking skills, opening pathways into university degrees in English, Law, Journalism, and Psychology. It develops in-depth knowledge of linguistics, including language change and child language acquisition, preparing students for professional careers in media, education, and communications.
