Physics

A-Level

Exam Board: Edexcel | Syllabus Code: WPH1

Overview

This course is ideal for students who are curious about how the universe works—from the tiniest particles to the largest galaxies. If you enjoy problem-solving, maths, and scientific investigation, and are comfortable with logical thinking and applying concepts to real-world situations, Physics is a great choice.

What will you study?

Physics is about understanding the fundamental principles that govern everything in the natural world. The course covers a wide range of topics, including:

  • Mechanics – motion, forces, energy, and momentum

  • Electricity – circuits, resistance, current, and power

  • Waves and Optics – sound, light, diffraction, and interference

  • Materials – stress, strain, and elasticity

  • Thermodynamics and Gas Laws

  • Fields and Forces – gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields

  • Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics

  • Astrophysics and Cosmology (in the A2 course)

A-Level Physics requires strong maths skills, especially algebra and trigonometry. It's a challenging but highly respected subject, often required for STEM degrees.

Assessment

A-level Physics is assessed across 6 external examinations. Three of these happen at the end of the first year of teaching, and three after the two full years of the A-level.

Future Pathways

You’ll develop strong analytical and mathematical skills, scientific reasoning, and the ability to interpret and evaluate experimental data. These are highly valued in fields like engineering, technology, medicine, architecture, computing, and research.
