“Leadership & Learning Are Indispensable To Each Other”

John F. Kennedy

Our secondary school curriculum has been designed to meet the requirements of current national guidelines and our commitment to providing a wide range of subjects, including modern languages and vocational training options. Students are grouped differently depending on the needs of the subject.

Summary Of Secondary Curriculum

The British School of Vilnius follows the English National Curriculum, a broad, balanced, relevant, differentiated and inclusive programme that meets all statutory requirements of the National Curriculum for England. Our secondary curriculum is designed to provide students with a strong academic foundation while supporting personal growth and future aspirations.

In secondary school, students benefit from a personalised learning pathway tailored to their individual needs, abilities and goals. Clear and flexible progression routes are available between each key stage, allowing students to make informed choices as they move through their secondary education.

Our commitment to offering a wide and balanced range of subjects ensures that all students study a modern foreign language at GCSE level, including Spanish, French as well as German and Mandarin, with most students also choosing history or geography as part of their GCSE programme. Subject choices are carefully guided through close collaboration between students, parents and teachers.

All students work towards IGCSE qualifications in their chosen subjects, provided they meet the required attendance criteria and successfully complete course and assessment requirements. This internationally recognised qualification prepares students for further study and future success.

Alongside the English National Curriculum, the school places strong emphasis on Lithuanian language and cultural studies. Lithuanian lessons are offered according to students’ age, background and prior experience, supporting integration into the local community, strengthening cultural awareness and promoting bilingual development.

The secondary curriculum provides clear progression pathways beyond the age of 16, preparing students for higher education, sixth form studies and the world of work. Students whose first language is not English receive additional English as an Additional Language (EAL) support to ensure full access to the curriculum.

Students are encouraged to develop their skills and talents through a range of opportunities, including extension activities for more able learners and targeted support where needed. Progress is monitored through regular formal and informal assessments, in line with the school’s assessment and reporting procedures, with clear communication of learning goals to both students and parents.
